It is commonly accepted that 2 to 3% of yield potential is lost for every 10 mms of water stress that occurs (never recoverable). So to put some numbers around this:

  • Cereal yields can be affected by up to 20 kgs/ha of yield for every mm of insufficient irrigation watering. Therefore 50 mms/ha of insufficient watering may cost 1 tonne /ha of yield at say $300/tonne equates to $6/mm/ha.
  • Ryegrass seed crops can be affected, by up to 8 kgs of yield for every mm of insufficient irrigation watering. 50 mms/ha of insufficient watering costing 400 kgs/ha of yield at $2.00/kg equates to $16/mm/ha
  • Field Peas can be affected, by up to 10 kgs of yield for every mm of insufficient irrigation watering 50 mms/ha of insufficient watering costing 500 kgs of yield at $600/t equates to $6/mm/ha.

It is recommended that the Aquaflex Sensor be buried in the main root zone of the plant and a second sensor buried below the root zone is highly recommended.

Burying the sensor into freshly worked soil is not a disadvantage for Aquaflex, because as with any sensor out there it will be measuring the soil in it’s current state, and freshly worked soil makes for an easy install job also.  It is best to install the sensor very soon after drilling, spread some seeds over the install site once completed.

Aquaflex helps you to manage your soil moisture at the correct levels throughout the season for the crop to maximise production and quality.

Brassicas are very sensitive to both dry and excessively wet condition. A lack of growth is easily seen in over irrigated areas or dry areas also. Aquaflex will help to identify the critical levels that will inhibit growth if breached.
